Your Own Wordpress Blog

But Not Just Any Wordpress Blog

It goes without saying that Wordpress has a corner on the market when it comes to blogging software. It's estimated that Wordpress has a 40% market share (of blogs) and growing according to Technorati’s 2010 State of the Blogosphere.

It's estimated that Wordpress is the platform of choice for about 8-12% of the total number of websites out there. That's a sizable number, and it seems to be growing.

What's Wrong With Blogging

The greatest hurdle with blogging is consistency. Picking out a minimum amount of time that you're willing to invest in adding content to your blog. The whole point of blogging is to share information, and if you're doing it as part of your business model, then ultimately you're hoping for traffic to your blog that will turn into sales.

The Power of the Networked Blog

We all know there is power in numbers, and therein lies the underlying beauty of the networked blog. You're not in it by yourself. The newest version of Wordpress, 3.0, added this feature to the basic framework of Wordpress. The ability to network blogs together under a common domain had previously been left to MU, or Multiple User.

What happens is the main blog has a primary domain address, www.mainblogname.com. Then there are sub-blogs, i.e. www.mainblogname.com/subblog.

Before this could be done in the website "back room", but these were all considered subdomains. Now each individual networked blog stands on its own.

The Real Power

I've had a blog of my own (actually more than one) for about 3 years. My blog, Tony Logue dot Com, Here's what Alexa has to say about my blog.

Tonylogue.com's three-month global Alexa traffic rank is 1,053,678. Approximately 51% of visits to it consist of only one pageview (i.e., are bounces). The fraction of visits to the site referred by search engines is roughly 6%. Tonylogue.com has attained a traffic rank of 238,848 among users in the US, where about 94% of its audience is located, and visitors to the site view 4.1 unique pages each day on average.

Now here's my new site... www.selfdevelopmentforyou.com/personaldevelopmentskills

Selfdevelopmentforyou.com is ranked #545,057 in the world according to the three-month Alexa traffic rankings. Approximately 2% of visits to the site are referred by search engines. Visitors to the site view 9.4 unique pages each day on average. Roughly 40% of visits to Selfdevelopmentforyou.com consist of only one pageview (i.e., are bounces). We estimate that 92% of visitors to the site come from the US, where it has attained a traffic rank of 74,837.

And that's only after a few months. Granted a low Alexa is the ultimate factor in the value of a site, but it is a means of measuring.

Money Talks, You Know What Walks

Now let's look at a site that gives a monetary value to web sites, bizinformation.org

I'm not going to post all the info here but I'll include a link at the end of the article.

According to bizinformation.org here's the site values.

TonyLogueDotCom = $79,616.64

Personal Development Skills = $116,536.32

Why So Much Power

I can only speculate, but here's my reasoning. The true power of the networked blog is diversification. You have multiple topics covered by multiple authors writing posts on a related topic but with different styles and perspectives.

Also, because you have different authors you have a better chance for new content being delivered more readily.

Well said Tony! This is awesome information on how important a blog is to your success. A blog brings so much awareness to you, your business, products or services.

BUT, as you say, you must be consistant and also provide good quality content as well as bring in some guest authors offering valuable content and backlinks.

Networking in any business is key, but when you add in a blog as your 'hub', it is a combination for success.
